ANÁLISE SWOT DO SETOR DE PROTEÍNAS ALTERNATIVAS PLANT-BASED: UMA REVISÃO SISTEMÁTICA

Keywords: Plant-based alternative proteins, Plant-based meat, Plant-based milk, Flexitarianism

Abstract

The aim of this article was to identify strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities of the plant-based alternative proteins sector, which are foods from vegetal origin, that have sensory characteristics similar to products derived from animals, as meats and milks. It was accomplished a systematic review that analyzed scientific papers, and identified internal and external weaknesses and strengths in this field. The challenges and potentialities identified must be analyzed taking into account the production chain, which may represent an opportunity or a threat, depending on the considered link. Interrelationships between the positive and negative factors raised in this research are demonstrated. It’s also highlighted that the studies in this field are multidisciplinary, comprising areas as nutrition, environment and economy. The use of SWOT matrix allowed identifying the negative factors, as relatively higher prices, need for ingredients processing and for clean-label packages and food neophobia. The strengths identified are combination of different plant-based proteins sources, greater acceptance and consumption than other alternative proteins, environmental sustainability and motivations for consumption related to health, animal welfare and ethic. The findings present relevant implications for organizations involved in the supply chain and researches, as they identify areas for improvement and opportunities of the sector.
