BRAZILIAN CULTURE AND THE DISSEMINATION OF COVID-19

Keywords: Hofstede Culture, National Culture, Covid-19, Covid-19 Dissemination

Abstract

This article aims to examine whether national culture interferes on the dissemination and control of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. Methodologically, it is configured as a research of a descriptive nature, carried out from bibliographic and documentary research. Regarding the approach of the problem, the analysis is qualitative. From the discussions and observance of the cultural dimensions of Hofstede that classify and define Brazilian culture, it is possible to verify that there is a strong indicator that the cultural traits of the Brazilian population interfere and justify the behaviors that impact and generate problems in the fight against and control of Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. With a culture of greater distance from power, collectivist, averse to uncertainty and complacent, the population usually accepts inequalities and does little to minimize them, has a low scientific belief, which encourages negativism and the sharing of false information. Aversion to uncertainty indicates the need for many laws, but at the same time, reinforced by the complacent culture, the population usually does not obey the rules, which justifies several behaviors that are contrary to the recommendations and norms for the prevention and eradication of the virus.
